Congratulations to Clare Lawrence, the 2023 Red Clay Educational Support Professional of the Year!
As the chief custodian at Thomas McKean High School and a longtime member of the Highlander family, Clare goes above and beyond to keep things running smoothly and efficiently for everyone on campus. She is known for her can-do attitude and her outstanding leadership of the school's custodial team.
"Clare exemplifies the professionalism and commitment to service that we strive for in Red Clay schools," said Superintendent Dorrell Green. "She puts students first and motivates others to ensure that the campus promotes the best learning experience possible."
In addition to her duties as a chief custodian, Clare often fills in for her counterparts at other Red Clay schools. On her days off, she travels out of state and puts her skills to use to help those in need—building access ramps for people who use wheelchairs, building affordable housing for low-income families, and volunteering for other service projects.
Clare's career in Red Clay began in 1992 when she joined the evening custodial team at Warner Elementary School. She accepted a position at Thomas McKean High School two years later and became the school's chief custodian in 2008.
As the winner of this award, Clare will move forward to represent Red Clay in the Delaware 2023 Educational Support Professional of the Year program, which gives her a shot at winning a $1,500 personal award from the Delaware Department of Education and $2,500 to be used for the educational benefit of students. A state selection committee will review district winners' applications and select a state winner in the 2022-23 school year.
