A.I.H.S. Rich Weaver Named 2020 Teacher of the Year

Alexis I. duPont High School Band Director Rich Weaver has been named the 2020 Red Clay Teacher of the Year.

A 1998 graduate of AIHS, Mr. Weaver joined the faculty in 2003. He attended Delaware public schools in Red Clay from kindergarten through high school.

After school, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and his Master’s Degree in Music Composition from the University of Delaware. Mr. Weaver has also been a percussion instructor with the University of Delaware Drumline since 2002. In the past, he has instructed and arranged for several other local high school bands on both a competitive and non-competitive level.

While teaching at AIHS, Mr. Weaver has provided many local performance opportunities for his band students to bring enthusiasm to the school and its surrounding communities. Other events have brought his students recognition on both a national and international level. Some of the most notable include the Inaugural Parade for President Barack Obama (2008), the Sugar Bowl Parade in New Orleans, Louisiana (2018), the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California (2004, 2008), London’s New Year’s Day Parade in England (2005, 2009, 2012, 2017), and the New Year’s Day Procession in Rome, Italy, which culminated with a performance in Vatican Square (2007, 2011, 2015).

Mr. Weaver believes that music should be a part of every person’s life in one form or another. He continually tries to expose his students to new ways to enjoy, appreciate, and be involved in all styles of music.

In his nominating packet, one Mom wrote that Mr. Weaver helped her son tremendously and that he clearly loves his job. “You can see the pride he takes in his band and his students,” wrote Christine Cesario. “Just talking with my son about his daily interactions with Mr. Weaver tells me that the students really look up to him and want to be the best they can be because of him.”
