Hess Fleet Rolls into the First State School
Terri Eros, science teacher over at the First State School, is pleased to share that they are one of the award recipients of the 2018’s Hess Corporation’s STEM Outreach program. Working with the Baylor College of Medicine, the company has created a unique and engaging resource for students. Winners received a dozen 2018 Hess RV with ATV and Motorbike model vehicles. The materials are connected to STEM lesson plans available for free download from the web.
The activities are adaptable across multiple grade levels and can be tied into all areas of the curriculum. In Road Trip: Distance vs. Time Restrictions, geography comes into play as students compete to see who can “visit” the most state capitals while following the rules of the road. Math takes center stage as students consider angles and slopes in the lesson Off -roading. It’s all about the engineering as students design, test and modify an obstacle course in ATV: Design and Test an Obstacle Course. Communication is the focus in the lesson Internet Ad Campaign: 2018 Hess RV with ATV and Motorbike. It offers students the challenge to use use persuasive words and images as they seek to create a multimedia message. As exciting as these lessons sound, they only comprise half of what is included in the 2018 initiative.
Although the lessons are available to everyone, Mrs. Eros is especially appreciative of receiving the materials. It didn’t take long for students to notice the Hess boxes and start asking questions about when they could be used. The hands on nature of STEM has its own appeal but adding in the ability to work with RVs, ATVs and Motorbikes makes it all the more engaging.
On the Road with Vehicle Performance: STEM Activities for Use with the 2018 HESS RV, ATV and Motorbike was developed in a partnership between Baylor College of Medicine and the HESS Corporation.
