randywine Springs Celebrates Veterans Day
At Brandywine Springs School and all over the country Americans are celebrating Veterans Day, a national holiday observed annually on November 11 to honor all U.S. military veterans.
On Wednesday, November 9 fifth grade students at Brandywine Springs took time out of their busy schedule to recognize local veterans in their community. They presented a gift to the daughter of a late retired veteran teacher, shared feelings obtained from personal interviews with veterans and presented a video entitled “The ABC’s of Being a Veteran”.
Major General Vavala Adjutant General of the Delaware National Guard and grandfather of a Brandywine Springs student was present, along with some of his staff to represent the military. Family, community members and many of the veterans who were interviewed were also present for the celebration. To conclude the program and show their appreciation the fifth graders sang “God Bless the USA”.
Veterans Day was previously known as Armistice Day which marked the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. In 1945 World War ll Veteran Raymond Weeks had the idea to expand Armistice Day to include all veterans and in 1947 the first national celebration was held. The holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law.
