Health and Physical Education
In 8th grade health education, we will soon begin a unit called Making Proud Choices! The curriculum is designed to help your child make wise decisions about his or her behavior during these next few crucial teen years. Your involvement in these decisions is encouraged throughout the unit.
Making Proud Choices! is a safer-sex approach to HIV/STDs and teen pregnancy prevention. It has been approved by the Delaware Department of Education, and identified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a “Program that Works”. It is aligned with the National Health Education Standards. Course instructors have completed a thorough 3-day training.
Often, students are apprehensive about communicating with parents about sexuality. They express their desire for open and sensitive handling of what can be, at times, embarrassing and uncomfortable. You are encouraged to discuss these lessons with your child. This is a way for you to share your family’s values and discover what your child is thinking about in regard to these important issues.
You may preview the curriculum and meet with me to discuss the program. If, after doing so, you feel your child should not participate in this unit, please write me a note to that effect, and other arrangements will be made. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions.
