BusPatrol Expands Mission to Protect Delaware Students — Red Clay Leads the Way in Student Safety

Why Safety Matters to Red Clay
Student safety is at the heart of everything we do. Every child deserves a safe journey to and from school, and protecting them requires the shared responsibility of our entire community. By investing in new technology and partnerships like BusPatrol, Red Clay is reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding students beyond the classroom—on the road, at bus stops, and in every neighborhood we serve. When drivers obey the law and remain alert around school buses, we help ensure that our students arrive home safely each and every day.
BusPatrol is expanding its mission to protect children on the ride to and from school by bringing its safety technology to Delaware for the first time. In partnership with Red Clay Consolidated School District (Red Clay CSD), BusPatrol has launched a new school bus safety program designed to make roads safer for families across the community.
Through the program, all Red Clay buses will be equipped with cutting-edge safety technology. This includes stop-arm cameras powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to detect when motorists fail to stop for a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop-arm deployed. The evidence is shared with authorized district personnel for review before a notice of violation is sent to the registered vehicle owner.
Red Clay has partnered with BusPatrol to take advantage of more advanced technology. With AI-powered cameras and cloud-based evidence transfer, violations are automatically detected and securely shared with the district for review—making enforcement faster, easier, and more reliable. This ensures that every violation is captured and every child is protected.
Nationally, data indicates that there are almost 40 million violations each year in the United States, putting children’s safety at risk. These stop-arm enforcement programs have been proven to significantly reduce illegal passing violations and make roads safer, with more than 90% of first-time violators never passing a bus a second time.
With the launch in Delaware, BusPatrol programs are now active in 22 states, protecting an estimated 2 million children aboard more than 40,000 school buses nationwide.
Delaware law requires drivers to stop when a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing. Vehicles approaching from either direction must remain stopped until the bus moves again or the lights are turned off. Only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop on roadways with four or more lanes. Drivers who fail to obey the law face a $100 fine for a first violation and $500 for subsequent offenses within 10 years.
