When to Stay Home
The Red Clay Consolidated School District is committed to maintaining a healthy environment for all students and staff. To help prevent the spread of illness in our schools, we ask that you review our health protocols for conditions such as fever, allergies, gastrointestinal issues, skin conditions, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and pharyngitis/strep throat. If your child returns to school before the recommended exclusion period has ended, their teacher will be notified and you will be contacted to pick them up. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school community safe and healthy.
Some examples may include but are not limited to:
- Fever of 100.4 degrees or more without the use of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin.
- Two or more episodes of vomiting and/or diarrhea.
Health Requirements for School Entry
School Health Services are an essential component of the overall school program that supports the individual health and well-being of each student through school entry requirements, helping students stay healthy, and quality nursing services provided by professional school nurses.
Click here to view the Health Requirements for School Entry required by the state of Delaware. Documentation is required regarding:
-
Health Exam: All students are required to have a health examination that has been administered by a healthcare provider. The health exam must have been done within two years prior to school entry.
-
Immunizations: Immunizations are reviewed by the school nurse upon entry into the Delaware public school system. Students and parents will be notified if the immunizations are not up-to-date with state regulations.
-
Lead Screening: Children who enter school at kindergarten or at age 5 or prior, shall be required to provide documentation of lead screening. The school nurse shall document the lead screening within the student's electronic medical record.
-
Tuberculosis Screening: New school enterers shall provide tuberculosis screening results from either a Tuberculosis Test or the results of a Tuberculosis Risk Assessment administered within the past 12 months prior to school entry. If the new enterer is in compliance with the other school entry health requirements, a school nurse who is trained in the use of theDepartment of Education TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire for Students may administer the questionnaire to the student's parent, guardian, or Relative Caregiver.

Allergies
Allergies can be life-threatening and schools must minimize risks to provide a safe environment for students with allergies. Managing food allergies at school is a collaborative effort between students, families, schools, and healthcare providers. The Red Clay Consolidated School District has approved 2012 guidelines for managing food allergies in the school setting. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the allergic-student to notify the school nurse of all life-threatening allergies (food, bee sting, latex). An Allergy Action Plan should be on file for all students with life-threatening allergies at the beginning of each school year. All medication prescribed in the Allergy Action Plan should be provided by parents to the school nurse. Medications to treat allergic reactions will be administered at school as directed by the licensed healthcare provider on the Allergy Action Plan. Please contact the school nurse at the beginning of the school year regarding your child's history of food allergy. We ask that you provide a Food Allergy Action Plan and prescribed medication to the school nurse at the start of school.

Asthma
An asthma action plan should be provided to the school nurse at the start of each school year. It is important to keep a rescue inhaler in the prescription box in the nurse office. It will be administered by the school nurse in the event of asthma symptoms, including cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath. Please consult your child's healthcare provider if your child is using his or her rescue inhaler more than twice a week. A flu shot is recommended for children with a history of asthma prior to the start of the flu season.

- Insulin for daily usage (with the pharmacy label)
- Extra vial/pen on insulin (with the pharmacy label) in case of an emergency
- Ketone strips

Feminine Hygiene Products
Delaware law requires that all public and charter schools maintaining any combination of grades 4-12 shall provide free feminine hygiene products in a minimum of ½ of bathrooms used by students who can have a menstrual cycle. Schools must publish on the school’s website and post in the school’s common areas the locations of the bathrooms where feminine hygiene products are provided. Such information should be updated if bathroom locations are changed. Each school should consult with its school nurse regarding purchasing the proper products. This information can also be located on each school's website on the School Nurse's page.
Health Screenings
Each year students in Kindergarten, Second Grade, Fourth Grade, Seventh Grade, and Ninth or Tenth Grade will have their vision and hearing screened. A letter will be sent home for any student whom does not pass the initial screening with further information. All Fifth Grade through Ninth Grade students will undergo postural screening for scoliosis. A letter will be sent home for any student whom does not pass the initial screenings. Theses student will then have an evaluation by a Physical Therapist from the Nemours Children’s Hospital in school. In addition all Kindergarten students will have a dental screening done by the Bureau of Oral Health & Dental Services.
Medications
Prescription Medications:
Prescription medications can only be administered by the school nurse with a written request from a parent, guardian, or relative caregiver, or if the student is 18 or older. Medication must be in the original, properly labeled container and include the student’s name, prescribing provider, medication name, dosage, instructions, pharmacy name and number, and current prescription date. Students are not permitted to carry or self-administer prescription medications during the school day.
Non-Prescription Medications:
Non-prescription medications may also be given by the school nurse with written permission from a parent, guardian, or caregiver, or if the student is 18 or older. The medication must be in its original container with a full label. The nurse will assess the student’s symptoms before administering. Students are not allowed to carry or self-administer over-the-counter medications during the school day.
Field Trips & After-School Activities:
For school-sponsored events off campus or outside regular school hours, medication will only be given with prior written consent that includes the student’s name, medication, dosage, times, dates, and method of administration. Student Health Collaboration
Nemours Children's makes it easier for school nurses to be a part of your child’s care team with our Student Health Collaboration (SHC) program.
Using our secure, Web-based electronic medical records system, Nemours Link, a school nurse can see your child’s plan of care and information on almost every visit to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware or a Nemours Children's Health location in Delaware. They can only view records if you, as a parent or guardian, have signed an authorization form allowing them to do so. They can also communicate with the Nemours care team through secure messaging.
Examples of what school nurses can see:
- Current medications
- Diagnosis information
- Treatment plans
- Care instructions after an injury, illness, surgery or hospitalization
Sharing records allows school nurses to achieve the best, safest care possible for your student. Access to these electronic health records is through a secure system that allows approved community health professionals a read-only view into medical records.
Seizures
Sports Physicals
Students who want to participate in interscholastic sports a Delaware Interscholastic athletic Association (DIAA) is required. This is different from a regular physical that students get yearly. It is only good for the current school year and must be renewed each year.
The State of Delaware sports year is from April 1st (of the current year) to March 31st (in the same school year). All pages must be filled out since this form travels with your child to all games and provides valuable information in case your child is injured.
Student Data Cards
Each school year, student data cards are sent home for you to complete and return. These cards are required by regulation and provide essential information, including emergency contact details in case of an urgent situation involving your student.
The information helps the school nurse stay up to date on your child’s health status—such as immunizations, new medical conditions, and your permission to administer nonprescription medications (e.g., for headaches).
It is very important that this card is returned to school promptly. You may either send the completed card back with your student or fill it out and submit it online to your school nurse. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping students safe and healthy at school.
Student Returning to School after an Accident, Birth of a Child, Injury, or Hospitalization
In order for the school nurse to provide appropriate follow-up treatment and accommodations, the following information is required when a student returns to school after an accident, birth of a child, injury, or hospitalization.
