Dear parents/guardians,
We are excited that you and your student are interested in The John Dickinson School Middle Years Programme (MYP)! You are choosing to send your student to the only school in the Red Clay family that is a recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. We offer instruction at both the middle school (MYP) and the high school (DP) level that meets all the demands required of an IB student.
“The IB programmes focus on fostering critical thinking and building problem-solving skills, while encouraging diversity, international mindedness, curiosity, and a healthy appetite for learning and excellence.” (ibo.org)
The MYP will challenge your student, as an independent learner, to work collaboratively with peers, building a community of diverse students beginning to realize their positions as global citizens. Highly successful candidates come with grade level skills in both reading and math. The rigorous core courses will require your student to demonstrate the ability to be a problem solver, and a questioner of “how” and “why”. The required 3 years of French or Spanish class not only build the foundation for a second language, but begin a journey exploring other cultures in our world. The required arts (Visual and Performing arts-includes band or chorus, and Design), allow students to experience and use the creativity that comes when mind and body connections are stretched in new ways. Physical and health education classes complete the mind/body connection as students discover how physical activity increases the ability of a person to think more clearly and move more effectively in our world.
The MYP programme is “A challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, the MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.” (ibo.org)
Our IB trained teachers are ready to help your student move to the next level in their education. IB designed lessons incorporate Red Clay district and state requirements, asking students to think and work independently and collaboratively, in and out of the classroom. IB students extend their knowledge beyond a single classroom through projects, paper, speeches, and performances of their own creation. Service projects require students to be a member of the school, of their community and of the world. Led by our excellent teachers and supported by the entire school community, your student, by embracing the challenge, will receive the education that makes our school an IB World School.
We are looking forward to helping you make the right decision for your student. If you have questions or would like to schedule a short tour please contact either Ms. Morano or Dr. Raymond using the contact information below.
