What is AVID Secondary?
AVID is a 6th -12th grade program that prepares students to meet their full potential and gain admission to a four-year college or university. Students take the AVID elective course in high school which provides them with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college. For more than 35 years, AVID has been instrumental in preparing students for success in higher education.
A core component of the AVID Secondary System is the AVID elective, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous courses. Students are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, writing skills, and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture. The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students and provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum. Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarships opportunities, and college admission requirement information.
The AVID Elective Student:
- Possesses the desire and potential to succeed in rigorous courses.
- Is committed to working hard in order to attain goals.
- Exhibits a positive attitude towards themselves and others
- Is open to new experiences in all phases of AVID
- Wants to become an independent learner
- Acts as a model student in the classroom by taking notes, listening, questioning and being prepared.
- Willingly cooperates and collaborates with peers as part of a team.
- Shares work for the purpose of improving it.
- Keeps parents informed of academic progress
- Expects and anticipates college enrollment after graduation
- Become actively involved in a variety of campus activities.
The AVID Curriculum, based on rigorous standards, is developed by middle and high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICOR methodology (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading.) WICOR instructional strategies engage students and scaffold instruction to make challenging content accessible. AVID curriculum is used in AVID Elective and content-area classes at AVID schools.

What our AVID Students say..
"AVID has helped me in so many ways from getting through high school to preparing me for college. Before AVID, I never really thought about college and definitely thought about what college I would be going to. Now that I am in AVID I have done research on colleges and have been thinking about what I would go to college for. Throughout avid I have completely changed my mindset. Before, I wasn't really concerned with how my grades looked but I realized that what I am doing right now could change my whole life. I recommend AVID to anyone who is up for it. It is a great way to get you through high school and to college. If you are the type of person who is willing to put in an effort to succeed, being in AVID could be a great resource for you. "
"AVID has helped me in a lot of ways like for example they have helped me stay organized, helped me get better, prepared me for college, etc.And yes I would recommend it to middle schoolers because I believe it would help a lot of them with certain things like as I said Focused note taking, college preparedness ,And also preparing them for the challenges of high school. So yeah that’s why i’d recommend joining to any middle schooler considering joining AVID. "
"As this being my first year taking an AVID class I've noticed it has helped me alot. There are many different ways AVIS has helped me throughout the year . One of the main ways it has helped me is by keeping me organized with work in all my classes. In AVID, we do progress reports a lot and they help me know where I am at in all my classes and what I have to work on. The other thing AVID helps me alot with is exploring my options for after high school. I’m not a big school person and wasn't really planning on going to college but AVID has helped me explore different things there are to do after and during high school. AVID also does a lot of fun things with the community and isn't like a normal class. I would definitely recommend taking AVID!"
"I have been in AVID for 3 years! I think it’s a really good program! I started AVID in 7th grade. It was very new to my school though. There are many reasons why AVID is so great! AVID helps you stay organized . It also helps you keep track of your grades. AVID has helped me with many things and it can help you to! "
"The reason I took AVID was because I needed to see how it was going to be when it's going to be time for me to apply [for college], I didn't want to be lost when it was finally time for me to make a choice so I took AVID not to only to help me with that but also with other things like with my grades and a lot more because when you are in AVID you stay humble. I guess and I’m saying that because before when I didn't take AVID I used to do my work, but not really at the same time but after I took AVID it really helped me, and the way it did was when you take AVID you learn what you have to do to get to where you want after high school and you understand that you have to work hard and do your work for you to actually get there and succeed. But that's not the only thing I learned from AVID. I learned so much more like staying organized and how to keep up with everything like my work and everything else which helped so much. So I recommend taking AVID because it’s really going to help you with everything which is going to help you when you get to the point where you have to do things like apply to college and just all of that. Also AVID helps you discover new things like new career things which can help you and can make you have more options which is good because you don't want to be lost. I've been in AVID myself for 2 years and I can say that it really did improve everything and it did change things like my grades and my perspective towards things. So if you are thinking about taking AVID I really recommend it will change you and your thinking which is good for everything. "
