Welcome to the Library!
About the Library Media Program
The School Library Media Program (SLMP) at Heritage Elementary provides instruction, resources, and services to assist students and teachers in becoming critical thinkers in the pursuit and use of ideas and information. Our program attempts to provide all students and staff members with equitable and timely access to ideas and information and an integrated instructional program to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.
In order to accomplish the purpose of the program described above, each class of students visits the library once a week for 50 minutes. Each lesson includes some sort of literature connection, an instructional lesson, and then time for the students to check out one book. Technology is often integrated into the lessons as well.
The Librarian works very hard to create an "instructional program that that is integrated with the curriculum and results in student achievement of learning outcomes in information literacy, independent learning, and socially responsible use of information and information technology." By working with the teachers in an effort to integrate information literacy skills into the curriculum units, instruction becomes more meaningful for the students. During the first quarter of the year the students focus on library orientation skills such as how the library is organized and how they can effectively locate resources within the library.
The Heritage Elementary Library is open before and after school for teachers and from 8:30am - 3:30pm for students and parents. Students must have permission from a teacher to visit the library before morning announcements.
